CAC of Pike Co. Early Childhood Programs use the High Scope Approach to early childhood education. Active learning is the principal element of the High Scope educational approach.
Active learning has five ingredients:
Materials
There are plenty of age appropriate materials that are readily accessible to children.
Manipulation
Children are free to use the materials in the way they need to; to explore them in any way.
Choice
Children set their own goals and select materials and activities that they are interested in.
Language from the children
Children communicate both verbally and non-verbally, what they are doing and what they have done.
Support from adults
Adults encourage children’s efforts and help them extend and build upon their work by talking with them about what they are doing, by joining in their play and by helping them solve problems that arise. All of the above ingredients must occur for the children to experience active learning.
